One evening in 1983, a pair of local police officers in the German city of Siegburg stopped by an old butcher shop to investigate reports of suspicious activity. Inside, they found three slightly scruffy twentysomethings with kilos of contraband. Bernd Drosihn, the ringleader, tried to object, but the officers confiscated the offending substances. After a stern reprimand, they handed over a letter announcing a preliminary investigation into the crime: making “Torfu.”

Standing at the corner of the General Post Office [GPO] at Mall Road, it’s hard to feel the seismic rumble under your feet. It’s either because you’re trying to find your bearings on this expansive, nondescript plaza where McLeod Road meets the Mall, or because the thick January smog is lingering all around you, and your laboured breath in your N-95 mask is fogging up your glasses.

Berlin - Digital letting agency Airbnb has suffered its latest setbacks in Berlin: the city government now requires all vacation rentals to have a registration number from the
Bezirksamt (district office). Meanwhile, a study released Wednesday shows that Airbnb has driven up rental prices: for every new Airbnb flat on offer, rents increased in the neighborhood by an average of 13 cents per square metre.
The study by the DIW German Economic Research Institute shows how vacation rentals are exacerbating the housing shortage in the capital. This is mainly due to Airbnb rentals that are sublet for longer than 180 days and removed from the regular housing market, Tomaso Duso, author of the study at DIW Berlin, said.
